The Vermedx® Diabetes Information System (VDIS) is a patented technology that provides documented improvement in the quality of patient care, as well as a significant reduction in the cost of treatment. VDIS is used by hospital systems, managed care organizations, and public health agencies. Results in these real-world environments consistently reinforce these benefits, which were discovered in a five-year clinical trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

VDIS has two components. At the core is a proprietary registry that is driven by laboratory test data. Critically, obtaining this data does not require keyboard input from clinicians or staff, but rather is collected via secure electronic connections with laboratories. The Vermedx® Treatment Outreach System applies complex algorithms to this registry in order to create timely reminders, alerts, and reports for both patients and providers. All of these focus care on high risk patients, and enhance timely patient compliance with best practices.

Beyond this focus on individual patients, the system’s reports enable public health agency officials and policy makers to accurately assess the extent of the disease in their community, and the quality of care being delivered.

For more information on how Vermedx® differs from traditional population management technology, please review our Vermedx® white paper.

Since March 2007, VCDS has been working with the New York City Department of Health to deploy our technology as a core component of their initiative to combat what Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden, MD, and the New York Times have labeled a ”crisis that is becoming an epidemic”.

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department engaged VCDS in May 2008 to install and operate a pilot diabetes registry–population surveillance. The stated intention of the Texas State Legislature is to extend this program to other large metropolitan areas should the pilot yield the expected results

The combination of empirical client experience over more than two years and validated clinical trial results indicates that Vermedx® improves the quality of the treatment process, significantly reduces treatment costs, and generates substantial goodwill from both clinicians and patients. You can read here about this research as it appeared in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Managed Care.

In addition to continually refining our diabetes surveillance and treatment technology, we are researching additional applications in related chronic disease domains. The Vermedx® system is the exclusive property of Vermedx, Inc., Burlington, Vermont, 05401.
